SYNOPSIS
Combining romance, supernatural events, and wry and slapstick humor,
The Master
and Margarita is based on the classic novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The Master and Margarita
tells the story of a writer who is imprisoned by the Soviet authorities for writing a
subversive novel. His arrest separates him from his secret lover, Margarita, a beautiful
woman who is trapped in a boring marriage. As time passes, each begins to give up hope
that they will ever see the other again.
One year later, the Devil appears in Moscow disguised as a distinguished
professor, and brings with him a band of wisecracking supernatural sidekicks. They wreak
havoc on a disbelieving Moscow, while searching for the Devils escort to their
annual Grand Ball. The search eventually leads them to Margarita, who agrees to host
Satans ball in return for some news on the Master. The devil does her one better by
not only reuniting the lovers for all eternity, but exacting revenge on all those
responsible for their separation.
HISTORY
Long assumed to be in the
public domain, the rights to the book The
Master and Margarita, are actually still
under copyright because the book was
initially banned in the Soviet Union. Many
attempts have been made over the years to
adapt it into a motion picture, and as a
result, the rights became fragmented. Only
recently have all the necessary rights been
pulled together to bring the film to
fruition.
